Meeting demands for manufactured medical implants

3D printed Ti6Al4V acetabular cup with delicate trabecular surface structure prone to alpha-case embrittlement

Read the article in the Furnaces International March 2026 issue.

Additive manufacturing is rapidly transforming the medical implant industry, enabling complex, patient-specific Ti-6Al-4V components with porous structures that support bone ingrowth. However, AM implants require post-processing to eliminate internal porosity and ensure long-term fatigue performance. Traditional hot isostatic pressing (HIP) can introduce oxygen contamination that forms a brittle alpha-case layer on titanium surfaces, compromising performance.

This article explains how Quintus Purus® clean HIP technology eliminates alpha-case formation by actively controlling water vapor and oxygen-bearing species in the HIP atmosphere before processing begins. The approach removes the need for component wrapping, preserving surface integrity even on thin-walled and porous AM implants while improving loading efficiency and productivity.

The article also highlights how Uniform Rapid Cooling (URC®) and High-Pressure Heat Treatment (HPHT™) enable faster cycle times and process consolidation, supporting lean, high-volume production of high-quality additively manufactured medical implants.
